Model spread is not a confidence interval. Tide and wind are context, not new corrections to surf size. Larger sets and changing hazards remain possible.

Know the spot
Middles is a separate cobble-reef entry in the Trestles progression. Its position between better-known names is not a substitute for reading its own peaks.

Often a little more forgiving than Lowers while still producing long, quality walls. Source note: Imported 6.8 catalogue; place and confirm the takeoff.
Before paddling out: Currents, crowding, submerged rock or cobble, water-quality changes after rain, and shifting bars.
Public shoreline or trail access; tide and closures matter Owner-placed takeoff; not a survey

THE FIELD GUIDE / Middles
Read this stretch of coast.
Look for the wave you can follow
Watch where a set first stands up and whether the shoulder stays connected through the next section. Compare the spacing of the takeoffs with the surfers already waiting. The retained catalogue describes left and right opportunities; record which line was actually available rather than treating the name as one fixed takeoff.
Compare shape at the same forecast hour
Use the same hour and model when comparing Middles with Lowers or Church. Their shared offshore sample describes incoming energy for the area. Differences you observe in the water are useful local information, not evidence that identical offshore components must produce identical breaking waves.
Do not borrow a difficulty rating
A comparatively softer-looking section can still have cobble, moving water and a busy inside. Middles retains an advanced catalogue rating. Check entry and exit options through several sets, watch your drift against a fixed shore feature, and keep to the park’s designated access routes.

A useful note for next time
Record the section you actually surfed, the time, incoming swell direction and period, wind and tide trend. Add what the wave did: connected sections, closeouts, drift or exposed obstacles. Comparing that observation with the same model next time is more useful than treating one colored number as the whole session.
